Eyiya (Turkey)

Eyiya Turkey These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Ahmet Lüleci. The name of the dance is the name of a village on the Black Sea Music : Lüleci Turkish Dances 3 Meter : 7/8 counted as QQS Formation : Short line, hands interdigitated with forearms parallel to the ground. Traditionally the leader is in the middle of the line, but the dance progresses to the R (CCW) Introduction : Begin dance with Zurnas (after drums) (Part 1A) In all of his instructions, Ahmet has a 4 bar step done only once at the beginning of the music, but he actually doesn't do this step in the video on his VHS tape, instead he goes straight into part 1B. We skip this introductory step too. I note it here for completeness. Music : Any French Canadian Reel or Jig Meter : 2/4 (or 6/8, it doesn't matter) Formation : Couples scattered around the room. The dance is a mixer Introduction : start at the beginning of a musical phrase. Bars 1-8: Swing partner Bars 9-12: Turn partner by the Right hand 8 counts. Bars 13-16: Turn partner by the L hand 8 counts Bars 17-24: Promenade around the room Bars 25-30: Do Si Do partner once and a 1/2, Bars 31-32: End back to back. Grab hands backwards with partner, then lean forward pushing off your partner’s bum, walking forward to find a new partner.

Music : Rhythme 4002; Barclay 820138; Echos de L'hexigon Meter : 3/8 Formation : Circle of 6-10 couples. start with M on L, all facing into the center. No hands Introduction : Depends upon the recording. Part 1: Avant Deux Bars 1-2: Men advance into the center with two Bourée steps (W: RLR, LRL; M: LRL, RLR), women stand in place Bars 3-4: Women advance into the center with two Bourée steps, while M back out of the center with two Bouree steps Bars 5-6: Repeat bars 3-4, with M advancing and W retiring. This dance was choreographed out of steps seen by Rod LaFarge at various Montevergine Festas in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania Music : Cinderella Tarantella, Victor 25-0127 Meter : 6/8 Formation : Two couples in a square. W on M's R. Introduction : None, start right away Footwork : Either Light running steps (2 per measure) or a Pas-de-basque step. Start with R foot. Castanets : the dancers may optionally click castanets. One click per step. Part 1: Circle Bars 1-2; Hold hands in a V position and circle to the right using a grape vine step: Step on R to R to start then step on left behind.
