Paul Jones (USA)

This is a traditional mixer from the American South East from the beginning of the 20th century.  It's characterized by calling the change of figures with a whistle. There are several different versions. I notate two of them below. The dance is named after an American Revolutionary Naval War hero. The dance was choreographed by Elsche Korf . The title translates as "In the woods of Haarlem". The song is from the 17th century (Thysius Lute book) Music :  https://youtu.be/zEEVD-ae1og (We-nun Henk) Meter : 4/4 Formation : couples facing LOD, holding nearer hands up and forward. Man's R hand is up and W's is down, in M's R hand. W hold skirt with R hand. M puts L hand on small of back Introduction : 6 bars (6 major pulses) after  the cello starts. California Twirl :  The couple exchanges place, with W turning 1/2 way CCW under M's arm into M's position and M walks around W CW 1/2 way to end in W's position. Music : Any French Canadian Reel or Jig Meter : 2/4 (or 6/8, it doesn't matter) Formation : Couples scattered around the room. The dance is a mixer Introduction : start at the beginning of a musical phrase. Bars 1-8: Swing partner Bars 9-12: Turn partner by the Right hand 8 counts. Bars 13-16: Turn partner by the L hand 8 counts Bars 17-24: Promenade around the room Bars 25-30: Do Si Do partner once and a 1/2, Bars 31-32: End back to back. Grab hands backwards with partner, then lean forward pushing off your partner’s bum, walking forward to find a new partner.
