Mexican Waltz USA These notes ©2018, Andrew Carnie. We learned this dance from Harvey Gardner who learned it in the 1950s from Larry Pallas at the Brooklyn College Folk and Square Dance Club. Michael Herman introduced it the International Folk Dance community, who probably got it from the square dance community of the US southwest. It is done to the tune Chiapanecas, but is not the same dance as the traditional Mexican Dance. Music : The first two records mentioned here are the ones most US folk dance groups used to do it to. This version of the dance was originally taught by Ercument Kiliç under the title "Bingol", but is a variant of the dance "Delile". Bingol means "Thousand lakes" and is a city in SW Turkey. Delile means "Crazy Girl". Bora Özkök also taught a version of this dance -- that version is notated elsewhere on this site. The name of the dance is a title given to an honored person. Also taught by Ahmet Lüleci Music : Solen 83 (Bora Özkök and the Sultans); Turkmen AL002 Meter : Part 1: 14/4; Parts 2&3: 6/4. Formation : Short Lines in shoulder hold Introduction : Bar 1 of part one starts with the Zurna. However, you actually start on count 2 of bar 5 of part 1, right before the drum roll and dance bars 6-7, just to the drum beats: Part 1 Note, this part of the dance is in 14/4 time. But it's much easier to notate it as 7 bars of 2/4.
