Koce Berberot (Weisburd/Coppey Version)- Гоце берберот - Macedonia

Image
Koce Berberot (Weisburd/Coppey Version) Гоце берберот Macedonia/Israel These notes  ©2017, Andrew Carnie. I believe this dance was choreographed by Nicole Coppey and widely taught by Ira Weisburd.  In Tucson we do a completely different dance (which I admit I like better, but of course I choreographed it). This version feels a bit too Israeli to me, because the in and out and turn in the third part isn't typical of Macedonian Dances. Some of the videos even have the dancers dancing solo in a circle. This is common to Israeli dances but not Macedonian ones.  However, the dance is sufficiently popular that I'm notating it here anyway. The title translates as "Goce the Barber". Music : Jonce Hristovski:  https://youtu.be/gfFaBzQrB3M Meter : 2/4 Formation : Closed circle, start with hands down in V position (or solo). Leads to the right. Introduction : Start with singing. Part 1: Bar 1: Facing center, touch R toe forward (1), Touch R to the diagonal R (2) Bar 2: Step R ...

Goce Berberot (Tucson Version) - Гоце берберот (Macedonia, sort of)

Image
Goce Berberot (Tucson Version) Гоце берберот Macedonia These notes & dance ©2017, Andrew Carnie. There is another dance by this name that I don't really like. You can see the video of that one here .  I admit I made this one up using traditional balkan dance steps. I also admit that the dance feels a little more Romanian than Macedonian. That might be ok since there are Vlach  and Greek  versions of the song too. But we'll put this melange down the American Folk Dance tradition of blending styles and ethnicities.  The title translates as "Goce the Barber". Music : Jonce Hristovski:  https://youtu.be/gfFaBzQrB3M Meter : 2/4 Formation : Open circle, start with hands down in V position. Leads to the right. Introduction : Start with singing. Part 1: Hands down in V position, facing LOD Bar 1: step on R in LOD (1), Fall on L behind R (2) Bar 2: Step on R in LOD (1), Close L behind R (&), Step on R in LOD (2) Bars 3-4: repeat bars 1-2 with opposite footwork bu...

Andrew's Little Râčenica  Рьченица (Bulgaria) These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. In September 2017  I intended to teach Dick's Little Râčenica to my group, but somehow I just totally made something else up, notated below and called this "Dick's little Râčenica).  This made up dance is essentially the first step of Elenska Râčenica. Unfortunately this is what people around Tucson are now calling Dick's little Râčenica. Oops!! Music : Any nice račenica tune Meter : 7/8, counted QQS Formation : Open circle, hands in W position, Leads to the Right. Vlasinka (12 bar Marčetić Version) Власинка  Serbia These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught by Miroslav "Bata" Marčetić . The dance is from Southeastern Serbia. This version of the dance is unusual in that it's 12 bars long. You can find a 10 bar version of the dance (which is more common to the region) here . Tamzara (Tucson Version) - Turkey

Image
Tamzara (Tucson Version) Turkey These notes ©2015, Andrew Carnie. There are many dances/variations called Tamzara. It's a fairly common name for a line dance done in 9/8 (along with Karşilama which is the solo dance done in 9/8). Among the other variants is  Rampi Rampi . and the Detroit version linked here . This version is a very basic version similar to Rampi Rampi. The dance is found in both Turkey and Armenia. We're doing it here to a Turkish Tune. Music : Any Tamzara tune in 9/8 will do. I'm particularly fond of Turkwaz's Tiren Kara Tiren . Meter : 9/8 counted as (12)(34)(56)(789) or QQQS, Formation : Line, in pinky finger hold, up in W position. leads to the right. Introduction : Start at the beginning of any musical phrase. If using the Turkwaz recording mentioned above, start with the singing.  Bar 1: Facing center, Step on R to R, hands rotate forward and down at wrist (as if dipping into something) (Q), Step on L behind R, hands come back up (Q), Step on R to...

Vračarka - Врачарка (Serbia)

Image
Vračarka Врачарка Serbia These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Originally taught in the US by Slobodan Slović. The title translates as "The Girl From Vračar". The word "Vračarka" can also be used to refer to a fortune-teller. The dance comes from the area around Beograd and Mladenovac Music : The dance fits best to the recording on the Slović cassette tape. I haven't been able to track down the original behind that workshop cassette. There is a recording on youtube that's the same melody:  https://youtu.be/gBP674AfWak but note it's much faster than the dance is typically done. Also it's arranged slightly differently, so the bits of the dance don't fit quite the same way. Meter : 2/4 Formation : Open circle, hands down in V position Introduction : None. The dance is technically leader called, but it fits the music nicely if you just repeat the three parts in order as notated, and occasionally substitute in the variation of part 3.  Part 1: Bar 1: Mov...
