Tabakiera (Poland/USA)

Tabakiera Poland/USA (Sacred Circle) These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. I learned this dance from Harvey Gardner. It's part of the sacred circle dance tradition found through out the world. The music is Goran Bregovič and Kayah singing a tango. The dance was choreographed by Wilson Liepnitz. There is an Israeli/Greek dance of the same name choreographed by Motti Kotzer. This one is completely different. Music : Kayah and Bregovič Tabakiera Meter : 2/4 (Tango) Formation : Closed circle hands in W position Introduction: Wait through the slow singing, then the violin plays two bars, and the singer starts. There are other versions of this dance notated on this site. One is a basic simple version , the other is a couple dance choreographed by Jaap Leegwater . This version is very similar to the first step of Iliana Božanova's Snošti Minah Kate . The dance is the Bulgarian version of the Greek Dance Syrtos . Music : Any Bulgarian Širto tune. Meter : 7/8 counted as SQQ. Formation : Open circle, hands in W position, leads to the R. Natalja (Tököl Version) Наталjа Serbia/Hungary These notes ©2017, Andrew Carnie. Learned by Nancy Bannister from László Halász on a tour to Hungary led by Steve Kotansky. The dance is a Rác (Serbian) dances from Tököl, Hungary. A slightly different dance was taught in the US in the 1950s and 60s under the title Natalijino Kolo, by the Hermans and Dick Crum. It is closely related to Malo Kolo. Versions of the dance are also called Natalijino Kolo and Natalija. It is named in honor of Queen Natalija, who ruled Serbia in the late 1800s with her husband King Milan. The dance is part of the "ballroom" tradition of urban kolo dances from the turn of the last century. The dance is from Severnjaško (North Bulgaria), and the dance is clearly related to the Romanian dance of the same name. There are many versions of Maleševsko, this version is from Goce Delčev in the Pirin region as danced by the Pomak people. This dance is closely related to the Serbian dance Ajde Jano  which is more commonly done in the International Folk Dance community to the same melody. There was a completely different dance (in 11/16 time) by the same name taught by Atanas Kolarovski. This dance bears no relation to Atanas' dance. This is the simplest one I've seen. This is a 2 wall country and western line dance.
